NOTES:
Built in 1974 and conceived as a shopping and social center of Evanston "The Main" had a controversial beginning. The project consisted of remodeling two connected buildings at Main and Chicago built in the 1920's for office, commercial, and living use. The shops, offices, studios and apartments existed around a landscaped courtyard as a sort of town center. The trouble began during the initial rnovation of the building with cost overruns and climaxed in an investigation by the Illinois department of Registration and Education of 14 charges of alleged mismanagement and fraud again Heil and Heil, the management company. Edward Noonan, an Evanston architect, was the primary spokesman for the project. Amazingrace was one of the primary occupants of "The Main." Reference File contains newspaper clippings about The Main from local newspapers. Please visit the reference department of the library to view the reference file.
