Look Me in the Eye
Robison, John Elder. Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's. 2007. (616.8588 Robis.J)
This is Robison's account of his lifelong communication and interpersonal problems, and the ultimate discovery that he has Asperger's Syndrome - a high functioning type of autism. The dysfunction within his own family growing up also compounds his situation; his brother is Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors. People with Asperger's cannot recognize common social clues through body language or facial expressions, and this often leads to misunderstandings with others. They also can experience extreme genius and fixation in certain areas - Robinson's particular genius is with electronic circuitry. This led him to gigs with various rock bands, including Kiss. Reading about the adventures and misadventures of rock life is by itself a good read, but understanding and accepting the Asperger disorder is the ultimate message of this book. (Ted R.)
