American Dervish

Akhtanullr, Ayad. American dervish. 2012. (Fiction Akhta.A)

Although his parents are from Pakistan, Hayat Shah is mostly a typical American boy growing up in the Midwest. His parents, although Muslim, are neither devout nor practicing. When his strong-willed, beautiful Aunt Mina escapes an abusive spouse in Pakistan and relocates to live with Hayat’s family in the U.S., she introduces the boy to Islam and he becomes a devout follower. However, after Mina begins dating a Jewish man who wishes to convert to Islam, Hayat—who has been exposed to anti-Semitism at his mosque—has a meltdown which sets into motion an unforgettable trajectory for everyone involved. (Russ K., Ref.)
