El Crimen del Padre Amaro (DVD)
El Crimen del
Padre Amaro. 2002. (DVD 791.4372 Crime 2003)
A newly ordained priest (Gael García Bernal) is sent to a small Mexican town, propitiously to season him up—and seasoned up he is. The townspeople are frequently corrupt, from the clergy and civic leaders to the religiously devoted underclass. If much of the town seems smitten in some way by the handsome young priest, including the sensuously pious 16-year-old Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancón), any reprehension at drawing him into their wayward dealings is never entertained. How will Padre Amaro fare in this environment, the earnest young man whose professed vocation is to serve only the Lord and His people? Based on the 19th-century Portuguese novel by José Maria de Eca de Queiroz, director Carlos Carrera's modernized film version of El Crimen del Padre Amaro (English: The Crime of Padre Amaro) will leave you squirming. In Spanish with English subtitles. (Russ K, Ref.)
