Shoeshine / Sciuscià (DVD)
Shoeshine (Sciuscià). 1946. (DVD 791.4372 shoeshi)
Two street urchins—friends who make their money as “shoeshine boys” on the streets of Rome—are falsely accused of theft in post-war fascist Italy, thanks to a family of unscrupulous black marketeers. When the youths are hauled off to a boys’ prison, a mock beating by prison authorities drives a wedge between their friendship…and the younger of the two joins a prison gang and goes rogue! An Italian Neorealist film, Shoeshine (Italian: Sciuscià) received an Honorary Award at the Academy Awards in 1948. This award was the precursor to what would later become the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In Italian with English subtitles. (Russ K., Ref.)
