The Skin I Live In/La piel que habito
The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito). 2012. (DVD 791.4372 Skin)
This movie represents a departure for famed Spanish director Almodóvar. Not only is this work based on the book by French author Thierry Jonquet and not an original piece, there are no overt Almodóvar staples like color, music, or sexuality. That being said though, it is one of the most haunting and utterly perverse movies I have ever seen. The film was marketed as Antonio Banderas' doctor character being widowed and so traumatized from the event that he sets out to create a genetically engineered, impenetrable skin. This is a minor plot point in the grand scheme of the film. The true heart of this movie lies in its confusion. Horrible events occur; a couple of rapes, a kidnapping, forced surgery, multiple suicides, and murder, but it is the unfolding and corresponding relationships of these events which create this magnificent and disturbing film. It will leave you in disbelief and wonder at that same time. In Spanish with English subtitles. (Kim - Reader's Services)
