We are drawn into both worlds - that of Arthur’s parents’ bitter separation and the disintegration of Annie’s marriage and mental breakdown of her estranged husband – through alternating accounts, creating a sense of foreboding throughout. With a blend of realism and compassion, O’Nan perfectly captures the pain of adolescence as well as the sadness and despair of broken marriages, and paints a compassionate and heartbreaking portrait of love and tragedy.
