Snow Angels
O'Nan, Stewart. Snow Angels. 1994. (Fiction Onan.S)
Stewart O’Nan weaves together two stories of troubled families in his haunting first novel, published in 1994. Returning to his hometown of Butler, Pennsylvania Arthur Parkinson tries to make sense of his past, as a 15-year-old high school student coping with his parents’ divorce and the violent death of his former, much-loved baby sitter Annie Marchand. We are drawn into both worlds - that of Arthur’s parents’ bitter separation and the disintegration of Annie’s marriage and mental breakdown of her estranged husband – through alternating accounts, creating a sense of foreboding throughout. With a blend of realism and compassion, O’Nan perfectly captures the pain of adolescence as well as the sadness and despair of broken marriages, and paints a compassionate and heartbreaking portrait of love and tragedy.
