Quentin Jacobsen, a high school senior in Orlando has
become obsessed with the edgy, curvaceous Margo Roth Spiegelman—after she’s mysteriously
disappeared. It all started when Margo (his old childhood friend) appeared
late night at his bedroom window and invited him out for a wild-and-crazy night
of revenge on some former high-school friends. After some perceived intimate moments that night, he wonders if she’ll still talk
to him at school. But she never returns to school—and evidence suggests she’s taken her
own life. Paper Towns is really a detective
story as Quentin and his friends try to find out what happened to Margo Roth
Spiegelman. In spite of a chapter composed almost entirely of needless bathroom humor, Paper Towns was nevertheless a clever enough story to keep me interested throughout
and, more than anything, it interweaves poetry, music, and social issues throughout,
giving this YA novel an intelligent air. Paper Towns was the winner of the 2008 Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Mystery. (Russ K.,
