Glenn Close first starred as Albert Nobbs on stage in the
early 1980s and said she had always hoped to film it to bring attention to
“invisible, isolated people”. Now 30
years later she, along with Irish novelist John Banville, adapted it for the
screen. Based on a novella by George Moore and set in late 19th-century
Ireland, the film revolves around the servants and inhabitants of a modest Dublin hotel, specifically the butler Albert
Nobbs who has lived most of her life disguised as a man. She has remained in
this subservient position in order to survive after a traumatic event as a
young woman. Glenn Close skillfully conveys her fear of being discovered and her
longing for love, but seems almost too restrained in the role. For me Janet
McTeer’s perfomance as the house painter Hubert Page brings real life, energy
and passion to this film – a story that is unsettling, thought-provoking, and
moving. (Laura, Reader's Services)
