Thin Ice
Thin Ice. 2012. (DVD 791.4372 Thin)
There are a lot of things that
this little gem has working against it: it wasn’t in theaters long, it takes
place in Kenosha, WI, and has to do with an old man and his violin. Truly, none of those are faults. This movie stars Greg Kinnear as a smarmy
insurance salesman, Billy Crudup as what is essentially a well-played and
likeable version of a Jim Carrey-esque locksmith, and Alan Arkin as a crotchety
old man. I really can’t say a lot about this movie for fear I’ll spoil the ending
for you, but the plot revolves around
Kinnear trying to sell Arkin an insurance policy and the odd relationship that
becomes of it. The movie starts off
really really slowly, at minute thirty-seven I felt like I’d been watching it for an hour
and a half. But it wasn’t too long
before it picked up. There is a criminal
act that changes the course of this film, as well as an unexpected ending. It was definitely worth watching, but not if
you are looking for a great action or dramatic film. It’s a quirky little Fargo-ish feeling flick. (Kim - Reader's Services)
