We Bought a Zoo

We Bought a Zoo. 2012 (DVD 791.4372 We)
When
I first saw the trailer for this, I thought it would be just another “Hollywood-ized”
film focusing on the romance between its two major stars (Matt Damon and
Scarlett Johansson). But despite my reservations, this film adaptation works
mostly because of its appealing cast, and the warm and genuine script. Matt
Damon stars as a recent widower trying to cope with his rebellious teenage son (believable
Colin Ford) and 7-year-old daughter (adorable Maggie Elizabeth
Jones) while struggling to come to terms with the death of his beloved wife. Realizing that nothing seems to be working, he
uproots his family by selling their home and leaving his job as journalist to
take on the running of a zoo badly in need of repair. Based on the nonfiction
book by real-life British journalist Benjamin Mee, We Bought a Zoo manages to rise above the usual sit-com fare with
its heartfelt performances, both human and animal. I would have enjoyed seeing
more interaction with some of the animals, but I still give this thumbs (or
paws) up! (Laura, Reader's Services)
