When Will There Be Good News?
Atkinson, Kate. When Will There Be Good News? 2008. (Fiction Atkin.K)
Fans of Kate Atkinson will be pleased with her latest offering—a suspenseful tale of grisly murders, wife abuse, insurance fraud, sleazy drug punks, and a spectacular train wreck. Jackson Brodie, the hapless former detective with a big heart and a knack for picking the wrong woman is once again our protagonist. As in her earlier novels, Case Histories and One Good Turn, Brodie is a reluctant hero. This time he’s dragged into a search for a missing person no one but the 16-year old nanny seems to think is missing. Atkinson sets a fast pace and relies on that wonderful but difficult to master device of synchronicity, weaving her characters in and out of the plot, in and out of each other’s lives, until the story comes to an exciting climax. Atkinson’s witty style, her finely tuned sense of irony, and her sympathetic take on the trials of everyday life show her to be one the cleverest novelists around today.
