Chicago Avenue-Main Street (CAMS) Coming Soon
Wednesday, 02 January 2013 17:29
Evanston Public Library expects to begin providing library service at 900 Chicago Avenue in mid January.
With the holidays and family obligations it was not possible to gather a quorum for a special Library Board meeting at the end of December. When our Board meets at its January 9 meeting, approval of the 2013 lease for 900 Chicago Avenue is on the agenda. In the interim, Evanston Public Library staff continue to sort and shelve books, DVDs and other materials in preparation for the opening of Chicago Avenue Main Street (CAMS).
On September 19, 2012 the Evanston Public Library Board of Trustees voted to assume responsibility for The Mighty Twig effective January 1, 2013. Hours of service and the storytime schedule will remain the same, but library services including check in/check out, reserves and the book drop will become available at the Chicago Avenue/Main Street location (900 Chicago Avenue, 847-905-0764) early in January.
Existing Evanston Public Library employees will staff the Chicago Avenue location, and the volunteers who have served so well will continue to be an important part of the team. Mighty Twig Transition FAQ

No Tax Increase for Library Services in 2013
Wednesday, 26 September 2012 00:00
While the Evanston Public Library (EPL) explores ways to enhance library services, one thing remains constant—the 2013 budget proposal does not include ANY property tax increase. Rather than seeking to raise taxes, the library staff and the EPL Board of Trustees worked carefully and collaboratively to continue service while keeping property tax funding for EPL at the current level. Any plans for expansion or additional services will rely directly on the ability to raise funds through competitive grants, donations and fundraising. If the funds cannot be raised, then services will be affected as a result.
Below are key highlights from the EPL Board of Trustees meeting on September 19, 2012:
- The Evanston Public Library WILL NOT request a property tax increase for library services in 2013.
- EPL has absorbed the cost of pay increases for our unionized staff without asking the taxpayers for additional funds.
- Though the costs of books, materials and databases continue to escalate, EPL will pay for these increases through funds that the Library aims to raise - again not through property tax increases.
- If sufficient funds are raised through an expanded and ambitious fundraising campaign during the fall of 2012, EPL will create an Evanston Public Library learning space at the site of The Twig effective January 1, 2013. The name of the new library will be Chicago–Main and will be managed by EPL employees with the support of volunteers. The budget reflects an additional $145,000 in development revenue and expenditures.
- The name of the library division will be changed from North Branch to Neighborhood Services to reflect the expansion of library service delivery throughout the City of Evanston. Fundraising and grants will support the anticipated 68% increase in development revenue needed to expand Neighborhood Services.
