On display May 2013: Karlene Mostek

Karlene Mostek is a local painter and the next artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now through the end of May, her collection Wild and Free will be on display on the 2nd floor of EPL's Main Library.  Combining a variety of media with text, her exhibit strives to "help others reflect on the beauty and the inner mysteries of the natural world."  You can preview Ms. Mostek's work by visiting her website and also meet the artist herself at an opening reception on Sunday, May 5 from 2 - 5 pm in the Community Meeting Room.

On display April 2013: Manuel Igual Alonso

Manuel Igual Alonso is a local photographer who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for April 2013.  A native of Madrid who splits time between Evanston and Spain, his collection My Left Eye presented 19 stunning photographs that express "not what he sees, but how he sees."

 

 

 

   

On display March 2013: Ed Dougal

Ed Dougal is a local printmaker who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for March 2013.  Influenced by his studies with the Art Institute's Alexis Petroff, his vibrant collection Monoprints, Mirrors, & More extended traditional printmaking techniques by adding rich pastels for eye-popping color.  You can view more of Mr. Dougal's work by visiting his website.


   

On display February 2013: Leonid Osseny

Leonid Osseny returned for February 2013 with a brand-new Local Art @ EPL exhibit.  After making his library debut in 2011, the local architect and designer came back with a vivid collection of illustrations used in Richard Reeder's book Chicago Sketches.  Depicting such diverse Chicago landmarks and personalities as Maxwell Street, Riverview, Nelson Algren, and the Big Klu, Osseny's stunning graphic works help bring Reeder's personal vignettes to life.  You can view more of Mr. Osseny's artwork by visiting the website for his Lincoln Terrace Art Studio and Gallery.

   

On display January 2013: Michael Berns

Michael Berns is a local photographer and architect who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for January 2013.  His evocative photographic collection From Within - From Without was inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson's "decisive moment" and showcases 24 striking black and white images captured everywhere from the Washington D.C. subway to the Texas rodeo circuit.  You can read a featured interview with Mr. Berns on our Off the Shelf  blog. 

   

Also in January 2013... NU's Scientific Images Contest Winners

titleThe five stunning winners of Northwestern University's 2012 Scientific Images Contest make a December stop at EPL as they tour Chicagoland.  Selected by a panel of artists, scientists, and community leaders, the eye-popping images were captured during wide-ranging scientific research and "invite you to enjoy both the aesthetics and innovation of NU science."  You can learn more about the annual contest and view additional winning images by visiting NU's e-magazine Science in Society

   

On display November/December 2012: Peggy Magee

titlePeggy Magee is a local painter and teacher who was our Local Art @ EPL artist for November and December 2012.  Having honed her skills at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, her vibrant collection features watercolor landscapes, still life, and portraits including "Pensive" (pictured).  You can check out more of Ms. Magee's work by visiting her website

 

 

   

On display October 2012: Galeria Aleman

Manuel Aleman and his sons Norberto and Daniel Aleman-Padilla were our Local Art @ EPL artists for October 2012.  Titled Galeria Aleman, their excitingly eclectic exhibit helped EPL celebrate Latin@ Heritage Month and included original poetry, comic strips, and drawings in pencil and ink.  (Pictured: "Woman Contour" by Norberto Aleman-Padilla) 

 

 

   

On display September 2012: Barbara Freeman

Barbara Freeman returned for September 2012 with a brand-new Local Art @ EPL exhibit.  After making her library debut in 2010, the local photographer and film director came back with an intimate exploration of Illinois' rural communities titled smalltown: faith, flags, & firearms.  You can check out more of Ms. Freeman's photography and film work at the website for her production company Freeman Pictures, Inc.
