On display August 2012: Faces of Evanston

altOver two dozen eye-catching images from the 2011 Faces of Evanston Photo Contest comprised our Local Art @ EPL exhibit for August 2012.  Based on the common theme "Reflection," the 30 featured photographs in the Kiwanis-sponsored touring exhibit included Matt Glavin's 1st place winner "All the Steps Before the Leap" as well as prizewinners by Becky Crump, Laurie Werner, Julie Mahieu (pictured), Heidi Randhava, and Tim Dilich.  You can learn more about this annual competition by visiting the websites for Faces of Evanston and the Kiwanis Club.

 

On display July 2012: Lisa D'Innocenzo

Lisa D'Innocenzo is an Evanston-based photographer who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for July 2012.  Her compelling collection A World Drained of Color was born from an interest in rural and urban landscape and explores "the tension between restless elemental energy and the dense immobility of human-made structures" while raising questions about "the nature of power, endurance, strength, and mutability." 

   

On display June 2012: Alice DuBois & Timothy L. Campbell

Alice DuBois and Timothy L. Campbell returned for June 2012 with a brand-new Local Art @ EPL exhibit.  After making their solo library debuts in 2010, the Evanston-based artists teamed up to present two dozen stunning works that mix oils, acrylics, and collage.  Spirited, surreal, and endlessly creative, the paintings were inspired by history, travel, alchemy, music, and even books from EPL's own collection which were included in the display.  You can read a featured interview with Ms. DuBois and Mr. Campbell on our Off the Shelf blog and also view more of their work at the following: Ms. DuBois' Flickr site and Mr. Campbell's Flickr site.  (Pictured: "The Window to the Next World" by Alice DuBois)

   

On display May 2012: Art Play with Poetry

The creative collaboration Art Play with Poetry was our featured Local Art @ EPL exhibit for May 2012.  Featuring photography along with works in watercolor, oil, and pastels, this impressive exhibition showcased nine diverse artists from the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and their interpretations of twelve honored poems from the 2006-2011 Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards.  (Pictured: "Rose in Snow" by Laura Dudnik)  

 

   

On display April 2012: Ronnie Dukes

altRonnie Dukes is a local painter, illustrator and designer who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for April 2012.   Inspired by Da Vinci's famous Vitruvian Man drawing, Dukes' Vitruvian Hero: Act I collection is the first installment in a planned three-part series set to explore the possibilities of "super" human evolution using elements of sci-fi and fantasy in the striking style of comic-book illustrations.  You can view more of Mr. Dukes' work by visiting his website and also read a featured interview with the artist himself on our Off the Shelf blog.


   

On display March 2012: Alice Sharie-Revelski

Alice Sharie-Revelski is a painter and photographer who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for March 2012.  Her photographic collection A Glimpse of Galapagos was captured during a 2011 trip to the Galapagos Islands and explores the diverse plant and animal life found there including the giant tortoise, blue-footed booby, and the Darwin finch.

 

 

   

On display February 2012: Victor Nelson

altVictor Nelson is a sculptor and native Evanstonian who was our featured Local Art @ EPL artist for February 2012.  Inspired by his career in architecture and constructed of steel, concrete, and wood, his six contemporary, abstract pieces explored "the positive and negative spaces created by structural objects" while attempting "to make the viewer aware of how they change when seen from all sides."  You can view more of Mr. Nelson's work by visiting his website.

 



   

On display January 2012: A Tribute to Hal Foster

The fascinating display A Tribute to Hal Foster was our featured Local Art @ EPL exhibit for January 2012.  Organized by comic-book aficianado Sid Weiskirch, the exhibit showcases the work of the legendary Hal Foster - a long-time Evanston resident and the father of the modern comic book.  Comprised of over 50 high-quality reprints of his classic Prince Valiant and Tarzan comics, the historic collection retraces Foster's three-decade-long career beginning in the 1930's.  You can view the exhibit and learn more about Foster in this recent interview with Mr. Weiskirch. 

 

 

   

Also in January 2012... NU's Scientific Images Contest Winners

nullThe five stunning winners of Northwestern University's 2011 Scientific Images Contest made a January stop at EPL as they toured Chicagoland.  Selected by a panel of artists, scientists, and community leaders, the eye-popping images were captured during wide-ranging scientific research and clearly "showcase the sometimes startling beauty of science."  You can learn more about the annual contest and view additional winning images by visiting NU's e-magazine Science in Society.

   

Also in January 2012... Marjorie Price

Marjorie Price is a local painter and writer whose highly original series Alphabet Art was featured as a special winter exhibit in January 2012.  Ranging from straightforward interpretations to the more abstract, her brilliant watercolors offered a playful take on the letters of the alphabet that was sure to spark the creative imagination in children of all ages.  You can view Ms. Price's work by visiting her website
