Father-Son Book Group: Between Shades of Gray

titleSunday, June 30, 2 pm, The Loft, Main Library

In World War II, Stalin's secret police arrested and displaced up to 3 million Lithuanian men, women and children. Some survived, many more died. Their stories have rarely, if ever, been told. Until now. Between Shades of Gray is the shocking story of one teen girl's life in a Siberian work camp within the Arctic Circle and the small acts of humanity that kept her alive.

Father-Son Book Group is an opportunity for fathers* and sons to bond through the acts of reading books and discussing stories. Boys in 6th-9th grade only.

Please register online, by calling (847) 448-8625, or by visiting the Loft during regular hours. Copies of Between Shades of Gray are available for check-out in the Loft.

*Includes mentors, guardians, and other adult family.

Raising Boys Book Group

altThursday, June 27, 7:45 - 9 pm, Children's Conference Room, Main Library

In this book group for parents of boys ages 1-13 years old, we will read engaging children's literature featuring fully-realized boy characters and discuss the story in an effort to better understand the challenges we face while raising our boys - and the challenges our boys face at home and in the wider world. Co-led by Jarrett Dapier, a teen services librarian and father, and Betty Mac Kune Karrer, a former family systems therapist at Northwestern University, this book group gives parents a chance to understand their sons better and learn strategies for giving boys the support they need to thrive.

Our June book will be HOLES by Louis Sachar. Please register online, at the children's desk, at the Loft desk, or by calling (847) 448-8610, and then read the book prior to our meeting (copies available at the children's desk).

If you are a two-parent household, both parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Note: parents only. No children, please.

Evanston Public Library Offers Innovative Pilot Programming This Summer

alt

Want to encourage your teenager to be innovative, creative and productive once school lets out? Would your daughter like to program a robot? Perhaps your son would like to use the latest technology offered by a 3-D printer.

Evanston Public Library (EPL) will offer innovative programming at all three of our locations this summer for teenagers, children and families to engage with technology, invent and tinker, create rather than consume, and discover the joy of learning while doing. The programming is designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, math & the arts and help develop valuable skills in an atmosphere of discovery, collaboration, and fun. What better way to learn!
