Beat Revisited

The "hip" "subterranean" Beat movement of the 1950s was not taken seriously by the literary establishment until the 1970s. William Burroughs named the beat poets "real architects of change" and he wrote of the movement as "an important part of the larger picture of cultural and political change in this country during the 40 last 40 years, when a four-letter word couldn't appear on the printed page, and minority rights were ridiculous".
