Title: Autumn
By: Smith, Ali

Call #: Fiction Smith.A

Daniel is one hundred and one, lying in a care home on his way to death. Elisabeth, his only visitor, is thirty-two. They have been kindred spirits since their first meeting when she was eight. This story of friendship weaves in and out of time in artistic language and imagery. The wordplay includes puns, repetition, lists, inversions, references to other novels (“It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times.”). Also it’s about Brexit and immigrants and parents and art. This book is magic though not about magic. It is the first in a quartet of distinct novels titled with the seasons.

Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.
