This is a slim volume, part reminiscence about the Waldorf Astoria’s recent history before the Anbang remodel began, part fascinating, deeply researched introduction to honey bee life. Strong recommendation for anyone interested in pollinators! Lesley Day is a New York City naturalist who authored 3 field guides to the NYC natural world and she writes so beautifully about bees. I will never see a bee the same way again. I also enjoyed the chapter about how the Waldorf Astoria (before its Anbang purchase) was giving back to the homeless through St. Bartholemew’s Episcopal Church, across the street. Anyone interested in a history of New York City, art deco architecture, the scions of the Gilded Age and in how chefs are trained or in great honey recipes will find something delectable herein.
