Why are so many fantasy and science fiction novels set in Victorian England? Could it be that there were so many changes to the society brought about by new science and technical discoveries?  Nathaniel Steepleton is a telegraphist for the British government. His home is a tiny room where, one day when he awakens, there is a fine gold watch on his dresser. Who left it? His office has intercepted telegrams threatening havoc by the Irish Clan na Gael, a terrorist organization. The mystery of the watch deepens when its unexpected alarm saves Thaniel’s life from a bomb. He sets out to discover the watch’s maker. In the search, he meets a young physicist who is hoping to find someone to finance her research without her having to marry for money.  Events seem to happen in an almost predestined manner. Is the watch’s maker responsible?
