The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck

Title: Women in the Castle
By: Shattuck, Jessica

Call #: Fiction Shatt.J

Gentler than I expected, this is the story of a morally upright German woman whose husband was one of a band of conspirators who tried unsuccessfully to assassinate Hitler. She promised at the time to take care of the wives and children if their husbands did not survive the attempt. Marianne lives with her children in the castle that belongs to her husband’s family. Eventually, she gathers widows and their progeny, who help each other to survive the rest of the war and the sad years that come after. Each of the widows is hiding a secret that could ruin their tentative camaraderie.
