Suspenseful and with unexpected plot-twists, this novel kept me on edge. Frankie, her sister Toni and their brother Vito have been left at a Catholic orphanage in Chicago during the Depression. Their mother died and their father can’t afford to keep them. The ghost who watches Frankie has been dead since the Spanish Flu epidemic. She is one among the ghosts who are powerless to do anything but observe, adding to the frustrations of their non-existence. The orphans in Guardian Angels, are educated, fed (terrible food and not enough of it), punished and submersed in religion. They make friends, are miserable, find lovers, have fun.  Pearl Harbor is bombed and the boys in the orphanage start disappearing. More ghosts will be made. Life will go on though not in its anticipated form.
