Title: This Is How It Always Is
By: Frankel, Laurie
Call #: Fiction Frank.L
Rosie, a doctor and mother of four boys, does everything she can think of-scientifically and superstitiously- in order to ensure her fifth child is a girl. Of course, she and her husband instantly fall in love with their new baby boy, Claude. However, when Claude is three, he says he wants to wear dresses and be a girl when he grows up. As Claude’s, (now Poppy’s) gender dysphoria becomes more pronounced, the family has to decide whether to let their son be his or her true self in face of the disapproval of everyone around. Rosie and Penn are the perfect parents for this child: tender; understanding; loving. But forces beyond their control seem to threaten the family and they flee from their Wisconsin life to Seattle where they allow Claude to become fully Poppy by keeping her background a secret. Secrets have a way of escaping though, and causing havoc. Written in a tender, wry tone, the story of Poppy and her way in the world is astounding.
