Author Event: “White Like Her”

author eventTuesday, July 17, 7 pm, Community Meeting Room, Main Library

Join us as author Gail Lukasik shares her fascinating new book White Like Her: My Family’s Story of Race and Racial Passing. Part memoir and part social history, White Like Her was inspired by Lukasik’s appearances on PBS’s Genealogy Roadshow and tells the story of her mother’s decision to conceal her black heritage and “pass” as a white woman in the Jim Crow South. Praised by the Washington Post as “one of the most inspiring stories of 2017,” White Like Her explores how Lukasik’s quest to uncover her mother’s racial lineage ultimately changed her own outlook on race and racial identity. Lukasik will take questions following her reading, and copies of White Like Her will be available to purchase.

Gail Lukasik is a freelance writer, editor, and the author of the Leigh Girard mystery series. She previously taught writing and literature at the University of Illinois-Chicago where she earned a Ph.D in English and also managed their Nonfiction Writing Program. She lives in Libertyville.
