Kids' Events

A minimum of 8 children is required for storytimes and programs to be held. Children must be residents of Evanston or attend school in District 65.  Book Babies and Time for Twos is limited to 12 children with a parent or caregiver. Time for Twos is meant to be a special time for a parent and child, so no older or younger siblings. Registration required unless otherwise noted.

Caldecott Club for K-4!


Thursdays, September 22, October 13, November 10, December 8, 7 pm, Children's Public Conference Room, Main Library. Registration starts 9/1!

We have Caldecott Fever!  Evanston Public Library is teaming up with Skokie Public Library for this exciting program! Mr. Brian will share with kids in Grades K  to 4 what makes an award-winning picture book.  Learn the inside scoop on how the Caldecott Medal is awarded, and then work with others to read some current illustrated books (which will be revealed and provided at each meeting) and discuss the best.  Caldecott Club members who attend one of the eight sessions at Evanston or Skokie Public Library can reserve a spot at our voting party in January (time and location to be determined)! 

Registration for the September and October sessions begins September 1, and registration for the November and December sessions begins November 1.  Please register for each date separately.  Register online for the September 22 meeting, register online for the October 13 meeting, in person, or by calling 847-448-8610.

Caldecott Club will also meet at the Skokie Public Library (Evanston residents welcome!) on Fridays September 30, October 21, November 11, and December 2 at 4:30 p.m.  Visit for more information on how to register at Skokie. 

Each meeting is limited to 20 participants in grades K to 4.

Want to help Evanston's kids get more Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) expertise? Do you have extra LEGOS around that your kids or grandkids have outgrown? Bring your LEGOS to the bin in the Children's Room to donate to NEW local robotics clubs!

Main Children's Room staff provide programs geared to children from a few months old  through 5th grade starting September 12:

Infant Rhymetime, Wednesdays at 9:30 am, for infants under 12 months and their parent/ caregiver

Book Babies, Tuesdays at 9:30 am, for 1 year olds and their parent/caregivers

Time for Two's Fridays at 10:30 (Tuesdays at 10:15 am at North Branch) for 2 year olds and their parent/caregiver

All By Myself, Mondays at 11 am OR Thursdays at 1 pm, for 3 - 5 year olds, without parents

Family Storytime and Craft, Mondays at 6:30 pm both at Main and North. Craft geared to 3 - 7 year olds. Working Parent Friendly!

Parent Child Workshop, Saturdays at 10 am, for 1 -3 year olds and a parent or caregiver Working Parent Friendly!

Tail Waggin Tutors, Tuesdays at 6:30 pm and 7pm for K- 5 is also taking phone registrations only starting 8/29: 847-448-8610. (Also available at North Branch on Tuesday afternoons; register at 847-866-0330 starting 8/29)

Our Drop In (no registration) storytimes The Young and the Restless (0-2) on Thursdays at 9:30 am and Preschool Storytime (3-6) on Wednesdays at 10:30 am continue as usual in September.




Fall Words! Mailbox Play starts 9/1

Bring your 1, 2, or 3 year old to play Mailbox at the Evanston Public Library this September! Play is an essential tool in literacy education; come experience the fun yourself with your toddler or young preschooler. Address envelopes to four animals in the library, put them in the mailbox, and then pull them out of the box and deliver them using "US Mail"  bags! Come and play Fall Words: Mailbox Play as many times as you like until September 30.
