Evanston has a brand new Library branch and the Evanston Public Library welcomes everyone to explore this community gathering space located in the new Robert Crown Community Center. The Robert Crown Library opens on Saturday, February 29, at the corner of Main Street and Dodge Avenue. It is filled with glass and light and the unlimited potential of all who enter.
Executive Director Karen Danczak Lyons said: “Our new branch has been carefully designed to meet the evolving needs of our residents and will feature programs, materials and staff whose diversity reflects our community, including bicultural and bilingual staff. I look forward both to welcoming new members to our EPL family, and to introducing current patrons to this new location.”
A poll released by Gallup in January 2020 revealed that visiting the library is the most common cultural activity that Americans engage in. The survey also showed that libraries are used most by young adults, women, and residents of low-income households.
A visitor to the new Robert Crown Library can work with free WiFi at the computer bar which features 10 desktops facing the tranquil outdoor reading garden. Librarians are ready to assist with technology, research or business questions. Small children can enjoy reading time in a cozy corner and begin their journey of literacy. Three study rooms and one community meeting room are available to all for quiet work, studying, and group gatherings. Parents and children can participate in bilingual English/Spanish Sunday family programs to enjoy Evanston’s newest library and relax on the weekend. Staff, collections and some programs are bilingual English/Spanish.
The new library is open: Monday through Thursday: 9 am to 9 pm; Friday and Saturday: 9 am to 6 pm; and Sundays: 12 pm to 6 pm.
Innovative “Open+” scheduling* offers extra convenience: residents with a valid library card and a signed use agreement can also access the Robert Crown Library on Monday through Friday from 7 am to 9 am; and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 6 pm to 9 pm, even when Library staff are not present. *This feature will be available later this year.
This new Library branch is part of a multi-purpose neighborhood gathering place: The Robert Crown Community Center and Library, complete with two full-sized ice rinks, a gym, an indoor running track, artificial turf fields, meeting rooms, multipurpose rooms, a childcare and education facility, camp programs, and so much more for individuals and families to use in their daily lives. There is free parking.
The new Robert Crown Library will open on Saturday, February 29, 9 am, at 1701 Main Street at the corner of Main Street and Dodge Avenue in Evanston.
