altBobby, short for Roberta, is on a dreadful school field trip to go skiing in Scotland. Things probably couldn’t get much worse- she’s just moved back to the UK after living in the States for several years and she’s desperately trying to hide her American-ness and avoid any kind of unneeded attention. So when everyone gets off the bus for lunch at a cafe she stays behind to eat by herself.  One other student, Smitty who is an amazing snowboarder, but also a future dropout is left on the bus with Bobby and the driver.

Unexpectedly- something slams into the bus startlingly everyone left onboard. As they look to see what’s going on they see their classmates and teachers stumbling back to the bus – except- things don’t look right there are pools of blood and the kids look kind of gnawed on.  Soon Bobby and Smitty are joined by a panicking Alice- who claims everyone dropped dead in the café and then woke back up as zombies.  The three classmates are reluctantly thrown together for a hair raising, hilarious  & blood splatteringly good  zombie adventure in Undead by Kirsty McKay.

Teen Review: Night / by Elie Wiesel PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 04 February 2013 00:00

alt Night is an enticing book about a boy called Elie who is 12 years old. Having grown up in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania, Elie is a studious, deeply religious boy with a loving family consisting of his parents and three sisters. After a year, the Germans begin setting up ghettos around the area. They are sent in horrifying train cars with 8 people in each. He is separated from his mom and sister. After arriving at the camp and seeing the horrible things that were happening, his nightmares start. The German soldiers take Elie and the others through the concentration camp processing. He is given the number A-7713. His dad is beaten to weakness over a loaf of bread and after a while, Elie starts to only care about his own survival. At the end of camp, out of 100, only a dozen survive. Finally, the American tanks arrive, ruining Hitler's plan to exterminate all Jews. After all Elie has been through he survives. As Elie recuperates in a hospital, he looks into a mirror and sees a corpse gazing back at him.

Not only is this book very interesting, it is memorable. You will never forget what poor Elie has been through and seen. I thought the author did his very best painting a picture in my head. Night has made me realize the horrors of what humans, like Hitler, can do to other humans. Night is a brilliant book because it gave me a full look on what has happened not so many years ago. Word by word the book kept on bringing me deeper and deeper into what happens to Elie. This book is so important because it explains something that happened once, but could happen again.
Almost reaching the end of the story, the author finishes with Elie's reaction to himself by writing, "I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me."
By saying this it left me in a state of disbelief. I have never read a more powerful ending.

Teen Review: Monster / by Walter Dean Myers PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 February 2013 00:00

altSteve is in jail and on trial for murder. His life changed in a flash because of some bad friends and bad decisions and now he's paying for his actions and decisions. He’s a black teen; he’s scared, nervous, and worried about his future. Everyone in the jury sees Steve as guilty and the only person that can make the jury see Steve as innocent is Kathy O'Brien, his defense lawyer.  Steve's fate is up to Kathy to make the jury see Steve as guilty or innocent.
Monster is a fast-paced book with lots and lots of detail on the situation of Steve. The book is written like a movie script and has a lot of imagery. The characters relate to many teens and you can relate to many of the teens and their situations. The courtroom mystery has enough drama and realism to attract many readers. The book sucks you in once you start reading and once you get into it you feel like you’re part of the whole book and you have a front row seat to everything that’s happening.
If you like mystery and like to have the feeling you’re a part of the book, then go check out the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers.

Teen Review: Something Borrowed / by Emily Giffin PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 02 February 2013 00:00

altWhat if you were in love with your best friend's fiancée?

That would be a problem.

Let me first say that Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin is a very interesting book. Its about a girl named Rachel who is the maid of honor in her best friend Darcy's wedding. She is getting married to a man named Dexter. Rachel has known Dex for many years even before Darcy even met him. They have always had a hidden connection. One night, Dex cheats on Darcy with Rachel. Sounds crazy already, right? This book is about how Dex and Rachel's secret relationship lasts in the midst of Dex and Darcy's wedding. Are they going to call the wedding off? If so, when will they? Are Dex and Darcy truly meant for each other or is Rachel a better fit?

I recommend this book to teenage girls who like romantic dramas. I loved it because I always wanted to know what would happen next! This book is drama and love-filled. Something Borrowed is an A+ book and I think any girl would be interested in it.
