The recent news item about wild animals escaping their cages and the owner who was found dead is quite similar to a novel that came out this year by Michael Koryta called The Ridge. His plot involves some paranormal themes, but the basic setting of an exotic animal farm, animals escaping, and dead/injured people strangely echoes the news story. ( I’m sorry to hear the owner in real life shot himself.)
Koryta is a young, talented suspense/mystery writer who has come out with several books since 2003 and I agree with many reviewers that he has risen to the top of the field. His books often focus on an unusual geographic feature, such as in So Cold the River, combined with a murder mystery written in an immediate and emotionally intense style.
