Thinking Outside the Building!

May 3, 2012

I’m not sure if this is a step in the right   direction or not– Detroit is now home to outdoor libraries which are being opened in response to recent closings. The U of M,  in collaboration with students from the Marcus Garvey Academy, has arranged for several libraries. They feature waterproof bookcases,  use the honor system, and omit library cards to help with the informal structure. My question is:  how many books can they handle and for how long? (This is not a setup for Midwest winters!)

Closure of Gary’s Main Library Branch; Others in Midwest Heading the Same Way

May 11, 2011

The Gary, IN, library board has taken the drastic, but necessary step of shutting the main branch library. There are 4 other neighborhood locations. The decision was made because the city population has dwindled and much less tax income is expected this year. Detroit is facing a similar situation. As heard on Changing Gears this morning.
