Noted author Maeve Binchy dies at age 72

August 2, 2012

A popular author of novels featuring memorable characters, complicated plots and sub-plots, and generally uplifting and positive themes, Binchy did not publish her first novel, Light a Penny Candle, until 1982 when she turned 42. It was an instant bestseller. She went on to pen seventeen more books with the last one, A Week in Winter, to be released later this year. Binchy said of her productivity that she could write as fast as she talked. Over 40 million of her books have sold. Two have been made into TV dramas–Echoes and The Lilac Bus, and two have been made into feature films–Circle of Friends and Tara Road. A full obituary is available in the L.A. Times.
