Take a break from the textbooks and check out a book you’ll actually enjoy at EPL

Stressful doesn’t begin to describe life at Northwestern. There are classes, club meetings, networking events, office hours, and midterms that never end! Somewhere around week 4, it starts to feel like there’s no time to relax. But, as the days get shorter and the temperature begins to drop, it’s important to find ways to wind down. And what better way to unwind than putting down your textbooks, brewing a warm drink, and reading a good book that you won’t have to write an essay about?

If you’re looking for books that won’t add more stress to your plate, the Evanston Public Library is the place to go. Once you register for a library card, you’ll have thousands of books at your fingertips. From new releases to cult classics, the library has the titles you need at the end of a busy day. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for at the Main Library, we can have it delivered from other libraries across the region.

Can’t imagine lugging around another book in your little tote bag? Don’t worry, because you’re not limited to checking out physical books. Having a library card gives you access to online resources like Libby, an app that allows you to check out e-books and audiobooks. Now you can read or listen to an 800-page book as you get ready in the morning, while you eat lunch, or between classes, all from your phone or tablet.

If reading just isn’t your thing, your library card gives you access to Kanopy, a free movie streaming platform. You can also come to the library and check out physical copies of your favorite movies and TV shows.

All of this and more can be yours once you register for a library card. As a Northwestern student, all you need is a photo ID, your Wildcard, and access to your Caesar account. Bring all of your materials to the circulation desk, ask to sign up for a library card, and you’re done! If you can’t find the time to come to the library but can’t wait to start reading or streaming, you can register online for a temporary library card. This card is valid for 30 days, and you’ll get immediate access to all of the library’s online resources.

The library also hosts a plethora of events. Check out our events page to learn about book clubs, mental health seminars, repair cafés, and more.

Whether you’re getting a library card or not, come check out the Evanston Public Library. It’s a great way to escape the monotony on campus, get some work done, and participate in library programming. And who knows, maybe you’ll find the perfect book to get you through the rest of the quarter.
