John Donovan, I’ll Get There. It Better Be Worth the Trip (1969, own voice). This was the first novel for teens from a major mainstream publisher (Harper & Row) that spoke openly about being gay–with the predictable backlash from the conservative community of critics and publishers and even congressmen. 13-year-old Davy Ross is forced to move in with his alcoholic mother when the grandmother who raised him dies. His father, whom he visits infrequently, is only a remote presence. Into his lonely life enters a classmate: they become friends. But then something unexpected and amazing happens between the two boys, which is what the novel is actually about. Available at https://archive.org/details/illgetthereitbet00dono

Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts (2016, Queer Own Voice). Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of “autotheory” offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author’s relationship with artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes the author’s account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, is an intimate portrayal of the complexities and joys of (queer) family making. https://www.graywolfpress.org/books/argonauts
