This was the year of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Assessment, so we turned the spotlight on accomplishments in those areas.

evanston ward mapIn the 2nd ward, we partnered with the Joseph E. Hill Education Center, providing service to more than 400 of Evanston’s youngest learners. Early childhood is an essential time to start building literacy skills so we reach out across the community to help make it happen.

We published 101 Best Books for Kids. We work hard to ensure diversity of all types in our selections.

In the 4th ward, groundbreaking for the new Robert Crown Community Center and Branch Library was celebrated in July. The new 6,000 square foot library branch will be the first new library construction since the Main Library was rebuilt in 1994.

In the 5th ward, we continued an enhanced presence through multiple partnerships including: Y.O.U., Bethel African Methodist Church, Evanston Own it, Family Focus, and Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, among others.

We continued our work to help Evanstonians build digital literacy, including training in Spanish and in several off-site locations.

This was the second year with a full time social worker on staff at the library; she held more than 653 meetings with patrons in 2018.

All told, this year we partnered with more than 175 organizations to meet the diverse expectations and needs of Evanston residents.
