Book Covers: Amazing, Arresting, and Artistic

November 1, 2011

It’s time for another look at standout, beautifully designed book covers. I’ve gathered examples that are attention-getting and cleverly convey a message about the content of the book.

What I have seen in my recent forays into cover art is that some              designers opt for simplicity. I find that a portion of the simpler covers are very effective and the rest leave me feeling about as blank as the cover, wondering what the message is or why there’s an such an abundance of empty space. (To the right is the cover for One Red Paper Clip. )

Others, however, offer intricate and involved art, graphics or collages of different elements arranged with skill.

Here are my favorite fairly recent covers and links that will take you to current articles about book covers. (There are links to much older outstanding designs, as well.) The comments from artists on the Huffington Post provide insight into the process of creating book covers.

Where Do Fashion, Libraries, and Chicago Intersect?

September 25, 2011

I did a real double take recently. The CTA bus in my neighborhood showed photos of designer Karl Lagerfeld’s library as the backdrop for supermodel Coco Rocha and his new line for Macy’s called “Impulse.” (above) How did I recognize the bookcases? They were clearly from the same setting I saw in my Off the Shelf post from a couple of weeks ago, “Deluxe Designs for Library Lovers.”

To justify this fun and quirky discovery, here are some links to fashion design and modeling books that we own at EPL. Pleasant surprise: hot new editions right off the catwalk! (Hint: try searching with keywords fashion, fashion design, modeling, and/or career.)

Deluxe Designs for Library Lovers

If you had unlimited funds, would you design the library of your dreams? This website is dedicated to the aesthetics of beautiful libraries and all types are represented. Curious what Karl Lagerfeld’s bookshelves look like? They’re here. Plenty of libraries ranging from small to enormous are featured, as well. Take a look at the “unusual” link–there are truly way-out methods of storing your literary treasures!

PS- Consider the impact of these impressive rooms and how they compare to a single e-reader, or perhaps a bunch. Technology’s wonderful, but can it create atmosphere?
